Onions, leeks, and potatoes are sensitive to low temperatures. Frost causes significant damage to young stems and bulbs, and it can compromise the tuber crop cycle. In particular, onions and leeks fear spring frosts, low humidity, insufficient heat, and hail, which can slow down leaf development, thus influencing bulb production. For optimal bulb development, the production of these crops – as well as many others – therefore requires higher temperatures and optimal humidity levels.

The innovative Arricover by Arrigoni, developed with the aim of ensuring frost protection for crops, is a strong, transparent, and breathable fabric that combines high quality, lightness, longevity, and effective protection for cabbage, turnip, lettuce, carrot, leek, garlic, chicory, beetroot, parsley, strawberry, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and melon. In potato production, it can be used both to protect the crop from late frosts and to anticipate the production cycle.

Various field tests have demonstrated its effectiveness on different crops. In particular, it has been tested in the Netherlands on onions and leeks and on potatoes in Slovenia and Italy (Puglia). Tests have shown how the transparency of this agro-textile, combined with the typical transpiration of knitted fabrics, provides optimal gas exchange, creating a dry and more frost-resistant habitat. Furthermore, the barrier effect produced by Arricover keeps water on its surface, preventing it from settling on crops and causing frost damage.

Transparency also allows light to pass through, creating optimal conditions for photosynthetic activity. The good permeability of the fabric prevents the formation of condensation and moisture, favorable conditions for the development of various diseases, including fungal diseases. Easy to install, Arricover can be placed directly on crops or on supports, tunnels, or used to close the sides of greenhouses. In extreme weather conditions, it can be laid on Arrigoni’s non-woven Agrivelo fabric, achieving an even higher level of protection.
